Aaron Edward Torrez entered this world on March 14, 1996. From his first moments, Aaron brought joy to every life he touched. At the age of 2, he was diagnosed with diabetes, the first of many illnesses which would affect his health. Yet, true to his character, Aaron found the positive in his situation and used his lifelong health concerns to develop an admirable spiritual strength. He was a faithful brother in Christ, exemplifying in his daily life the teachings of Christ.
Aaron found a friend in every person he encountered and amazed his family with his selflessness and loyalty. From a young age, others gravitated towards him for support and advice. He always prioritized others’ needs and would do everything he could to help. From rescuing co-workers when they ran out of gas to supporting a friend through a difficult time, Aaron embodied dependability.
Throughout his life, Aaron relied on his mental and spiritual strength to get him through difficult times. As he faced some of his most troubling health issues, he channeled his energy into helping others by building a wishing well for the South Texas Children’s Bereavement Center. This act of service was one of Aaron’s proudest accomplishments as an Eagle Scout. Then, chosen by his Scouting peers, Aaron was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, a society within the Boy Scouts of America for Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. Aaron also dedicated his time to volunteering with St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church. He served as a Core Member for the Teen and Adult ACTS Retreat, volunteered with the Youth Ministry, and was an active force within the Men’s Club. He also volunteered with Camp Independence of San Antonio, a summer camp for children with diabetes. Aaron always dreamed of serving in law enforcement or the United States military. Due to his health, he could not serve in those capacities, but Aaron still found a way to be a man of service for his community. He never focused on his struggles, instead pouring his heart into helping others.
Aaron’s dedication to others made his family proud. Even while facing his greatest health struggle in his leukemia diagnosis, Aaron remained a strong, loving man. He left this world on June 8, 2020, yet his memory lives on in each of us and the stories we share. His spirit has been called home, guided by his faith and by the light of those he loved. He now rejoices in his eternal reunion with the Lord, surely with the warmest smile across his face.
