Adolph George Burckhardt

November 25, 1928 — January 15, 2016

Adolph G. Burckhardt, 87, of Comfort, TX, formerly of St. Bonifacious and Minneapolis, MN, died peacefully in hospice on January 15, after suffering a major stroke on New Year’s Eve. Survived by his wife Rose; daughter Barbara and her mother Ann; son Brian and daughter-in-law Shauna; grandchildren Azalee and Brock. Preceded in death by parents Adolph G. senior and Signe (Johnson) Burckhardt, and elder sister Dorothy Monacelli. Adolph was born in Minneapolis in 1928, and graduated from Central High School. He worked as a draftsman and electrical designer for several firms including Setter, Leach, and Lindstrom, and later was employed by the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department for more than 20 years, where he did drafting, surveying and street mapping. A deeply spiritual man and longtime pacifist, Adolph was granted Conscientious Objector status in the 1950s and became an active member of Minneapolis Friends Meeting until his move to Comfort in April of 2015. Adolph loved nature and the outdoors and enjoyed camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters and family trips to Camp Amnicon. A theater-lover, he was an active supporter of Theater-in-the-Round Players from its early years in the 1950s. Adolph and Rose were married for 35 years and greatly enjoyed spending time together, dinner with family and friends, and working together on home and garden projects. Adolph and Rose recently moved to the charming town of Comfort in the Texas Hill Country to be near Brian and his family, saying to many that he had “come home.” A man of good humor who loved puns, Adolph often joked about his move that no matter what the day was like, he would be “living in Comfort.” Adolph was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. The family wishes to thank the staffs of University Hospital’s Intensive and Acute Care Units and VITAS Inpatient Hospice in San Antonio for their excellent and compassionate care. An informal memorial gathering for the family’s Texas friends and neighbors was held at Adolph and Rose’s new home, and a Memorial Service for him will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 15, at Minneapolis Friends Meeting, 4401 York Avenue South, Minneapolis. Memorials preferred to Minneapolis Friends Meeting and Theatre in the Round Players.
