Anthony Herbert Koch

July 26, 1944 — February 9, 2025

Anthony H. Koch, a respected businessman, rancher, and community member, passed away on February 9, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in San Antonio on July 26, 1944, to Herbert and Hermeon Koch, he was a devoted father, grandfather, and successful entrepreneur who dedicated his life to his family, his businesses, and his community.

After earning a degree in accounting from St. Mary's University, Anthony obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and practiced public accounting for 20 years. Known for his sharp mind and strong work ethic, he became a partner at Corpening, Jungman & Co and held that prestigious position for twelve years before retiring in 1984. Following his retirement, he partnered with his father to buy and sell several ranches, continuing his entrepreneurial journey.

In 1989, Anthony and three partners formed a holding company that acquired Alamo Iron Works, Inc., where he served as CEO and became the company's largest shareholder. Over the years, he expanded his interests, acquiring multiple ranches in the 1990s and growing his ranching operations. In 2010, after selling his shares in Alamo Iron Works, he shifted his focus to a new venture with his family, founding Koch Ranches and Gourmet Country Store, offering grass-fed meat products from his ranches. Anthony also opened and ran the Alamo Heights Farmers Market, where his business was well-loved by the community until 2019.

Anthony's final years were spent managing his ranches and embracing the tranquility of country life. He was known for his passion for hard work, his sharp business acumen, and his deep love for his family. He will be widely remembered for his sense of humor and his love of entertaining, often welcoming friends and family into his home and to his ranches.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Koch Ludwick and her husband, Robert; his son, Bret A. Koch; and his grandsons, Kyle and Michael Ludwick. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church on April 4, 2025. A rosary will be said at 3:30 p.m. with a funeral mass to follow at 4:00 pm in the church. Family and friends will be welcomed at a reception in the Parish Banquet Hall after the mass. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
