Antonia "Tonie" Cortes Medina, a devout Catholic and a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt, and sister, passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2024 at the age of 87.
Tonie was born on January 20th, 1937, in Bebe, Texas to Antonia and Rafael Cortes. She married Deacon Damacio Medina in 1955 and together they raised three sons, Orlando, Chris, and Dominic. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and a generous person who always helped those in need. She was active in various ministries in the church, especially singing in the choir with family and friends at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Nixon, TX.
Tonie had a strong work ethic and a cheerful personality. She worked as a meat inspector for the U.S.D.A. at the Holmes Chicken Plant, a cashier at the Hap’s Handy Shop, and a server at both Casa Chica and Eat More Café and Restaurant. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Tonie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Eusebio and his wife Ninfa, her brother-in-law David Trigo, her sister Irene and husband Deacon C.V.Barron, her sister-in-law Rosa Cortes, and her daughter-in-law Helen Medina.
She is survived by her sons, Orlando, Chris and his wife Maggie, and Dominic and his wife Michele; her sisters, Amelia Trigo, and Terry Torres; her brothers, Raymond Cortes, Gilbert Cortes, and his spouse Dora; her grandchildren, Orlando Jr., Christopher, Martin, Barbara, Alexander, and Phoenix; and her great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jenna, Mercedes, Juliana, Ariana, Sebastion, Bella, Violet, Christiana, Zachariah, and Zamera; and her great-great grandchildren, Damon, Aurora, Zion, Iris, and Azreal. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 31st, 2024 at 6 pm followed by a Rosary at 7 pm at St. John Neuman Catholic Church at 6680 Crestway 78239, San Antonio, Texas. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 1st, 2024 at 11:30 am at St. John Neuman Catholic Church, followed by a burial at 1:30 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Nixon, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. John Neuman Catholic Church Altar Guild in Tonie's memory.
The family would like to thank the staff of Northeast Baptist Hospital and Rosewood Senior Living for their compassionate care and support. They would also like to thank everyone who prayed for and comforted Tonie during her illness.
Tonie will always be remembered for her faith, kindness, and joy. She touched many lives and left a lasting legacy. May she rest in peace and rejoice in the presence of God.
