Armando James Abney

December 3, 1953 — May 25, 2020

“God, Country, and Notre Dame”

Armando J. Abney passed away peacefully at his home in San Antonio, on May 25, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 21 years, Lori Abney and his beloved son, Aidan Abney. He was born December 3, 1953 in St. Louis, Illinois and graduated from Assumption High school in 1972.

He received his graduate degree from Sam Houston State University. Then he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He worked as a Professor for 30 plus years at St. Mary's University. There he taught classes in Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice. He had a passion for teaching and valued the relationships he built with his students and colleagues.

Armando had a great sense of humor and was a respected tennis player. Many of his tennis friends said he was an inspiration on and off the court. They knew that when they played against him, they had to bring their “A-game”.

Above all else, Armando was a loving husband and Father. He loved nothing more than spending time with his son. Whether it was long walks in the park, hanging out at the local coffee shop, watching Notre Dame foot-ball games, or just conversing. His imprint in our lives will never be forgotten.

Due to Covid-19, St. Mary’s University will hold a virtual Memorial service on Wednesday August 26, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. More information about the service will be posted on the St. Mary’s University Ministry Facebook page on or after August 1, 2020. The link for this is: https://www.facebook.com/stmuministry/

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the "Armando Abney Scholarship Fund" which is being managed through St. Mary's University. This fund will help a student in need on their quest to fulfilling their academic achievement and will keep Dr. Abney's legacy alive!

Contributions may be made online at https://alumni.stmarytx.edu/give-now (enter Abney Memorial, then select "other") or pay by check (payable to St. Mary's University) and mail to:

An Irish Prayer:
May the road rise to meet you,
may the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rains fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again may God hold you
in the palm of His hand.

He is preceded in death by his Father James R. Abney and Mother Virginia G. Abney. He is survived by his wife, Lori Abney, son Aidan Abney, and sibling Sharon Abney.
