Betty Shockey

April 10, 1935 — February 13, 2011

Betty Louise Shockey of San Antonio passed away at 10:26am on Sunday February 13th, 2011 at Odyssey House Hospice in San Antonio, Texas. She is survived by her loving family: children Denise Shockey, Melissa Thomas and husband Randy , Michael Shockey and wife Yulia, Verline Fowler; grandchildren Derrick and Chris Ibarra, Kathleen and Abigail Thomas, Bence Shockey, James and Thomas Fowler; husband Bud; brother Corky Phipps and wife Roberta and sister-in-law Raedele Uballe. Betty is preceded in heaven by her parents W.O. and Rose, her brother Jack and second husband Joseph Pagliara.
The first born of W.O. and Rose Phipps in Corpus Christi, Betty was the elder of her two siblings Jack and W.O. Corky Phipps Jr. Betty was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Northeast High School in 1953. Betty grew up in the family business that father W.O. started known as Phipps Plating Co. when he was discharged from the Army after World War II. Betty married Verlie Bud Shockey Jr. on April 23rd 1961 in San Antonio and moved to Denton Drive where they raised their four children. Betty and Bud later opened their own plating shop and antique refinishing shop on West Ave. in 1975.
Mom always enjoyed having the most beautiful yards and flower gardens at home and was especially proud of her roses for which we will always remember her by. She enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques which we will always cherish. Mom would not stop working after retirement and continued to work full time until just a few years ago because she said it kept her occupied. She loved to go dancing in her later years which she did as often as she could with Joe. Mom was always there for us, caring and understanding and no matter the circumstance everyone was welcomed in her home; friends and family, friends of family and extended family. She was firm but more importantly fair with a heart of gold larger than life itself. She kept her pain but shared her love. Mom will be missed but never forgotten. We love you mom.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church at the Thrift Chapel on Saturday February 19th at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers charitable donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Betty Shockey.
