Carlos C. Cervantes

Canary Island descendant is laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston. Carlos C. Cervantes joined the ranks of angels on June 30, 2012. Born with his twin brother on December 27, 1923, Carlos family heritage traces back to Jose Benardo Cervantes who landed from the Canary Islands in Vera Cruz, Mexico. Jose, after temporarily settling at the Bay of Espiritu Santo, moved to San Antonio in 1724, making his home opposite the Alamo. Carlos great great-grandfather, Agapito Cervantes, was among Ben Milams troops who marched on San Antonio from Mission Conception on December 5, 1835, and took possession of the Veramendi house, where Milam was killed. Agapito was also present when General Cos surrendered San Antonio to the Texians after a four-day house-to house battle. For his service Agapito was awarded 320 acres, and by special act of the legislature 960 acres in 1860. Carlos great-grandfather, Manuel Cervantes, fought in Company D, First Texas Infantry, during the civil war and afterwards settled on the Cervantes farm on Calaveras creek, 12 miles east of the city. On November 28, 1942 Carlos enlisted in the U. S. Navy. On April 27, 1943 he completed his training at landing craft school, and served in the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet as Coxswain of LCM. At the end of the war, after 27 months of sea duty, he separated at Camp Wallace, Texas. He continued with the Naval Reserve until April 4, 1955. Upon his return to civilian life Carlos worked at Carls Shoes. He would purchase cigarettes from a near by drug store, from a young girl, who soon turned out to be the love of his life. Maria Consuelo Gladys” Amaya. They were married on October 1, 1947. Shortly after their marriage, Carlos obtained a position at Kelly Field AFB, from where he retired. They resided in the home they bought together for over 55 years. Carlos is survived by his wife, their children, son Charles A. Cervantes, son Stephen A. Cervantes, and daughter Mrs. Cynthia C. De La Llana. Five grand daughters, Mrs. Melissa K. Friesenhahn, Mrs. Vanessa C. Valdez, Mrs. Clarissa M. Tejeda,Mrs. Natalie P. Killian, and Nicole A. Pizza, four great grandsons, Dakota C. Valdez, Dillon C. Valdez, Jake R. Valdez and Matthew M. Valdez. Most importantly Carlos was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a life long faithful servant of Our Lord.
