Carol Ann Ortega, born July 07, 1949, made her journey to Heaven on March 11, 2015, following a courageous 15-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Teaching was her inspiration, and the children were her guiding light and driving force to continue that long battle. Throughout her fight, she continued to teach three-year-olds at The Little Schoolhouse in Del Rio, TX, until the last year of her physical life. The amazing love & support of those children’s parents and school staff allowed her to continue to positively influence hundreds of young lives.
Carol was in love with life. She always gave the best of herself with no strings attached. As one of the most positive people one could ever meet, even when conditions became quite difficult, she never failed to note, “It is what it is. Make the best of it.” No one can say she ever complained…about anything…except, perhaps, if she didn’t get her coffee. She loved her coffee. She loved her books. She loved Kenny Chesney and George Strait. But her greatest loves were the love-of-her-life and best friend in her husband, her two children and their families, and her schoolhouse kids.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, Anthony Ortega; daughter Rae Lynn Ortega & son-in-law Justin Wright; son Michael Ortega & daughter-in-law Keri Ortega & their children Hagen & Cheyenne; and sisters & brothers-in law Sharon & LeRoy Maul, and Eva & Doug Sloan and their children and grandchildren.
No funeral services will be held, however, a joyful celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Carol’s memory either to the

American Cancer Society at https://donate.cancer.org/index, or to The Little Schoolhouse at www.DelRioLittleSchoolhouse.com/support-tls.html.

Mom, you’re an inspiration and our hero for how to live a good life in a truly selfless way. We love you and we miss you dearly, but we’ll see you again, likely reading a great book at the best eternal coffee shop in Heaven, with a group of children sitting at your feet.
