David L. Rodriguez

April 2, 1964 — July 10, 2024

David Rodriguez died peacefully, surrounded by his family on July 10, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 60. David was born April 2nd, 1964, in San Antonio to Alfredo "Fred" Rocha Rodriguez and Phyllis "Chana" Lopez Rodriguez.

He came from a humble upbringing on the Westside of San Antonio and graduated from Holmes High School and the University of Texas at San Antonio. In his youth, David was taught Bible-based principles; he had faith that the promise of everlasting life was real. He lived his life by loving God and his neighbor. (Job 14:14-15)

Among his many accomplishments, David was most proud of his children; Aidan and Iris, to whom he was a doting and dedicated father. Together they traveled, ate good food, and laughed (a lot). David had so many friends and people were drawn to him. He loved cooking for friends and family- whenever you were with him, you were sure to eat well. He maintained his sense of humor throughout his 8-month struggle with cancer, aided by his girlfriend Wendy and his family.

David had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, culture, arts, music, food, politics and pop culture. This knowledge also inspired him to become a middle school U.S. history teacher during the last few years of his life.

You could always find David watching the news, Jeopardy, or whatever sports game was on. He loved music, live concerts, and sharing about having seen iconic acts such as The Smiths. He liked to blast oldies on walks through Brackenridge Park and on the Riverwalk. And, finally, he loved to reminisce on his travels through Europe, childhood stories, and many famous people he served throughout his career which ranged from concierge to banquet director at luxury hotels.

David is survived by his children, Aidan and Iris Rodriguez; his girlfriend Wendy Hetzel; his 5 siblings, Abel Rodriguez, Mayte Benavidez, Fred Rodriguez, Beckie Rueda, and Paul Rodriguez; along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
