Diane Lynn Day Askin passed away on June 1, 2015. Diane was born July 23, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, and led a life of loving and serving others before herself. Known as a hard worker and generous friend, she was dearly loved and will be missed by many. Diane graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, where she was an accomplished competitive swimmer, and throughout her life she enjoyed recreational swimming in rivers and lakes. For many years, Diane was the concessions manager for the snack bar at Jackpot Bingo, where she and her mother, Ila, were known and loved by the regulars. Her prior employment included owning and working in local bars such as the Crystal Pistol, the West Avenue Ice House, and the I Don’t Know Yet. Diane was known for her sweet tooth and her love of Blue Bell ice cream. She was never without a glass of iced tea (unsweetened, of course) and enjoyed indulging in hamburgers, candy, and cottage cheese. She was a passionate, loyal, dedicated fan of the San Antonio Spurs, and in the ‘70s and early ‘80s she often attended games alongside the original Baseline Bums. Her favorite Spurs were Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Avery Johnson, Sean Elliott, and Manu Ginobili. In her spare time, Diane also loved to play bingo and board games and spend time with her friends. Diane is survived by her husband, Robert, and his family; her son, David, and his wife, Laura; her mother, Ila; her brother, Eddie; her Uncles Don and Dick; her Aunt Elaine; her nieces Amber, Shauna, and Kristin; her best friends Marcie, Terri, Kathy, and Judie; her dogs Jake and Bugsy; and numerous other friends and family. Diane was preceded in death by her father, Edward; her stepfather Jake; and her grandparents Martha and Gene. Diane’s family and friends thank VITAS Hospice Care and Methodist Hospital for caring for Diane with kindness and generosity. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts in memory of Diane to one or both organizations.
