Dolphia Ann Dawson passed away in San Antonio, Texas on December 11, 2017. Dolphia was born February 1, 1938, in Tulia, Texas. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1956, then earned a B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1960.
After graduating college, she began her career teaching Home Economics in Corpus Christi, Texas. She married in 1961, and became a full-time homemaker in 1964 after the birth of her first son. Her family relocated to Houston, Texas in 1965, where a second son was born in 1969. She moved to Simsbury, Connecticut, then to Naperville, Illinois, before returning to Texas. Dolphia resumed her teaching career in 1986, eventually settling in Junction, Texas in 1990 where she resided until her death. She taught Home Economics at Junction High School until her retirement in 2000.
Dolphia was active in her community, and a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Junction, where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). She was also very involved in both the Leti Study Club and the Texas Retired Teachers Association, where she served as treasurer. She enjoyed reading to small children at Library Story Hour and was recently recognized by her church for her many years of leading the pre-school children. Her greatest joy was in spending time with her family. Dolphia looked forward to family game nights and enthusiastically supported her family members’ recreational pursuits. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking.
Dolphia was preceded in death by her father, Aaron Dawson, and mother, Tessa Sprawls Dawson. She is survived by her sister Melinda Dawson of San Antonio, TX; son Gregory Dawson of San Antonio, TX; and son Stephen Dawson, his wife Darlene and grandsons, Connor and Sean Dawson of Londonderry, NH; niece Mindi Payne and her husband, Del and great-nieces, Zoe, Asher, and Shelby, of Great Falls, MT.
A memorial service celebrating Dolphia's life will take place on January 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 202 South 8th Street, Junction, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ministerial Alliance, 201 S. 11th St, Junction, TX 76849.
