Donna Mae Fisher

On December 12, 2018, while at home in San Antonio, Donna Fisher, age 67, was called to Heaven. She was surrounded by her family and under the care of Heart to Heart Hospice. Strong faith in the Lord helped her fight a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer.

On March 1, 1951, Donna was born in Iowa City, Iowa to John and Opal Fisher. She was raised on a farm near Wellman, Iowa and always felt true to her farming background.Donna graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman, Iowa. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Briar Cliff College in 1974. Her other studies included a Master of Education from Southwest Texas State University at San Marcus in 1984 and certification in elementary counseling.After completing her college education Donna began her career working at Salvation Army Girls Home in San Antonio. She went on to teach at Edgewood, Judson, Woodstone, Montgomery, and Stahl in San Antonio. Donna had a varied and successful teaching career of 38 years which included, being a speech therapist, testing coordinator, classroom teacher, and school counselor. Donna was dedicated to her students creating and implementing an anti-bullying program in 3 Northeast ISD schools.

In 1986, Donna started working for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DODDS) teaching and counseling in elementary schools on U.S. military bases. She taught at Grafenwer, Germany and other bases for 9 years. While teaching in Germany, Donna had a son, Conor Watts. Donna was a devoted mother. Her biggest joy in life was her son Conor. Donna's passions were fitness and competitive running. She competed in and finished the New York, London, Nuremberg, Munich, and San Antonio marathons
Being in Germany allowed Donna to travel to London, Paris, Rome, Egypt (where she explored the pyramid of Cheops), Jerusalem, Holland, Denmark (where she and Russ Watts were married), Sweden, Norway, Italy (where she biked down the Adriatic to Greece), Berlin (when the wall came down), as well as Poland, Moscow, and Czechoslovakia. Among other hobbies, Donna enjoyed biking, horse-back riding, and Euro-American traveling. She also enjoyed cheering for her favorite basketball team, the Spurs.

Donna is survived by her son Conor Watts of San Antonio, Texas. Russel Watts of Rhode Island, Mary Kay Lowenberg and her husband David of Huntsville, Missouri, Mark Fisher of San Diego, California, Robert Fisher of Wellman, Iowa, Diane Christensen of Coralville, Iowa. Special nieces & nephews include, Amber Whitaker and her husband Tim & family of Austin, Texas. James Christensen of Coralville, Iowa, Joshua Lowenberg and Kristy and Steven Walz & family of Moberly, Missouri. Donna was preceded in death by her parents John and Opal Fisher.

A funeral mass for Donna will be on Thursday, December 20th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma, Texas at 1:00, followed by a reception at the church hall.
