Ethel L. Campbell, San Antonio resident, age 83, died from chronic and acute illness Thursday morning, Jan 17, 2013 in her home. She was preceded in this life by her husband of 43 years, Chuck, son, David, and infant daughter, Jewell. She will be interred with Chuck and Jewell at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Mrs. Campbell was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and was very proud of her British Commonwealth heritage. Following World War II, she met and later married her husband Chuck. Together they had seven children and travelled the world following Chuck’s career in the U.S. Air Force. Mrs. Campbell’s proudest accomplishment, and indeed a great challenge, was raising six children overseas, almost exclusively on her own, while Chuck was away from home serving in Korea and later Vietnam. Following Chuck’s retirement from the service in the late 1960’s, she and her family made their home in San Antonio, Texas. Ethel was part of the “Greatest Generation” and always expressed concern for the welfare of others and asked what she could do for them rather than asking what they could do for her. She was an exceptionally avid reader and enjoyed listening to classical music. Mrs. Campbell is survived by her sisters and bothers-in-law, Les Ruth Bignell, Beatrice Hussey, Stella Lott, and Dolly Bob Griffin, her five adult children, thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandsons and one great-grandchild on the way. She will be missed by many. Her family would like to acknowledge Dr. Flynt and all of the other health professionals at SAMMC who attended to her health needs.
