Gary Wayne Battles, a culinary master with a heart of gold, passed away on April 20, 2024, in his beloved city of San Antonio, Texas. He was born on November 21, 1947, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to proud parents Nelson Battles and Corine Lewis Battles.
Gary's passion for cooking led him to pursue a successful career in the culinary arts, where he truly excelled. His dedication to his craft and his warm personality made him a beloved figure in San Antonio's scene. Gary's love for people and his family defined him - family meant everything to him. He was known for his caring nature, outgoing personality, and friendly demeanor. Walking through the streets of San Antonio brought him immense joy, and he found solace in the simple pleasures of life.
A veteran who proudly served in Vietnam and his country with honor as a paratrooper, Gary not only had a knack for creating delicious dishes but also cherished the act of nourishing others. Cooking brought him immense joy and allowed him to touch the lives of many with his culinary creations.
In addition to leaving behind a legacy, Gary is survived by his daughters Leticia Renee and Freyda McKenzee Battles, brothers Robert B. Lewis and Lynn Battles, along with sisters Pearlie Mae Ross and Evelyn Dorothy Banks, grandson Sir Gregory, grand-daughter Legacy Renee, and his adopted culinary grand-daughter Zoe Soliz. He is reunited in heaven with his parents Nelson and Corine, brothers Luther, Nelson Alexander, Nelson (Budd), Willie G., sisters Grace Hamilton, Maxine Davis, Wilma Jean Battles, Verdell Bulls, and Phyllis Battles, and best friend Sandra R. Battles.
