Gene Leroy Cross, 91, died peacefully at home in Louisville, Kentucky. He is
preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years Gloria Jean (Woodall), brother
George Walter, daughter Sheryl Lynn, and grandson Gene Noel Villarreal. He is
survived by his sister Ann Wallace, and his 4 loving children: daughter Barbara
Ann, grandchildren Daniel W. Bracken & Rosalie B. Kelley (Paul); son Lewis Paul
(Paula), grandchildren Lewis Paul Jr. & Mary Rose; daughters Kelly Marie (J.
McCloskey) and Teresa Jean Blocher; great granddaughter Willow Ezra Riscar.
A native Texan, he graduated from Fox Technical High School in 1944, and then
immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Gene proudly served in
the Pacific Theater during WWII and fought valiantly in the Battle of Iwo Jima,
subsequently retiring as Captain in 1951. He then studied Law and Finance at St
Mary’s University in San Antonio, graduating with a BBA.
His professional career included VP of Operations at Joskes San Antonio, May
Company Cleveland, Pogue’s Cincinnati, and Stewart’s in Louisville, KY.
Big Gene was best known for his unconditional love for the entire family. A
devoted, practicing Catholic, he was an example of generosity, kindness and
forgiveness. He will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers donate to Memorial Services Detachment, Fort Sam Houston P.O. Box 340422 San Antonio, TX 78234.
