Gregorio (Greg) Barrera Esquivel Jr., a beloved self-made man and entrepreneur, passed away on February 16, 2025, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Born on September 25, 1951, Gregorio dedicated his life to building a legacy based on hard work, family, and the passion for life that he instilled in those around him. He was strong-willed and determined, yet his witty humor brought joy and laughter to those around him.
As an army veteran, Gregorio served his country with honor and pride, embodying the true spirit of selflessness. He was not only a protector of his nation but also a devoted family man and friend who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
Gregorio found joy in many interests. He enjoyed watching western TV shows and had a passion for classic cars. When his daughters were young, he loved spending time with them at the beach or lake, where he could unwind. He also enjoyed festivals and carnivals, especially Wurstfest, where he made lasting memories taking traditional photographs with family and friends. Gregorio is also registered with the Canary Islands Descendants Association.
He is survived by his cherished daughters, Magdalena Walker (Miller) and Stephanie Gonzales (Christopher); his loving grandchildren, Alyssa Gonzales and Matthew Walker (Sarah); and his siblings, Rose Mary Salas, Carmen Esquivel, Susie Vasquez (Frank), Thomas Esquivel and Betty Aragon (Jay) and numerous loving nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Nicknamed "Sonny" by many, he will be missed deeply, especially by his family who continue to hold dear the memories of his laughter, love, and unwavering support. Notably, he was predeceased by his mother Mary Barrera Esquivel, father Gregorio C. Esquivel and his son Gregory Barrera Otten, a loss that deeply impacted his life and the lives of his family.
Gregorio Barrera Esquivel Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will endure through the hearts of those who knew him. His presence will be profoundly felt, forever cherished in the memories of family and friends who had the privilege of sharing their lives with such a remarkable man.
