John Michael Bartley

John Michael Bartley, age 60, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, February 18, 2017.

Michael was born to John Peter and Betty Jane (Cameron) Bartley in Waco, Texas, on January 15, 1957.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Captain John Peter Bartley, USAF. His father was killed in action during the Viet Nam Conflict, February 3, 1963. His widowed mother then moved the family from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, to San Antonio, Texas. In December of 1964, Michael's mother, Betty Jane Bartley, married John R. Brooke III in San Antonio. John became a father to Michael and his older sister, Diane. Later the family was blessed by the addition of a daughter, Shannon.

Michael graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1974. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in July of that year. After serving less than a year, Michael received a medical discharge due to a head trauma received aboard ship. Upon his discharge, Michael returned to San Antonio and attended San Antonio College and, later, Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Michael was blessed with a winning personality, "lady-killer" smile, easy-going manner, and the ability to make friends readily in any situation, in any location. He is missed.

Michael was preceded in death by his step-father, John Brooke, on April 9, 1999. He is survived by his mother Betty Jane Brooke; his sisters, Diane Bartley Dawsey and Shannon Brooke Mantrom, plus their respective spouses, Tom Dawsey and Chip Mantrom. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces: Thomas Leo Dawsey IV (and wife, Rachel), Shawn Cameron Dawsey, Mark Campbell Dawsey, Sydney Ryan Mantrom, and Chloe Elisabeth Mantrom. Family surviving him also include various wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins. Finally, Michael is survived by his long time good friend, Charley Stevenson.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, March 17, 2017, at 2 PM and followed by a reception at the Fort Sam Houston Golf Club at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Michael's memory to the charity of one's choice.
