John “Mick” Michael Pendergist
On March 24, 2016, we lost our loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. John, affectionately called “PawPaw” and “Mick” was a retired Senior Chief in the United States Navy, after traveling the world, serving a tour in Vietnam, and spending time in Bermuda, Hawaii, Albuquerque, Florida, and other locations, finally settling in Texas. Mick also worked for the State of Texas as a comptroller and as a Navy civilian managing testing for prospective military personnel. In later years, Mick also participated and managed drug testing of college and professional athletes, and at one point he was the number one drug tester in the state of Texas. He was a strong man of great loyalty, integrity, and honor. He lived his life to the fullest; an avid runner, die-hard golfer, motor cycle rider, skydiver, poker player with friends like Arnie, Wayne, Greg, and others, and a consummate collector of various artifacts like Zippo lighters, Ford tools, and other items. He subsequently became an authority on each. Mick was a handy man who enjoyed fixing it himself, sometimes even tackling the impossible. He was always quick with a joke and would talk to anyone, anywhere. Mick was one of the friendliest people you could ever meet. Meeting strangers from all walks of life was a personality trait of his that was surpassed by very few. However, his family was his greatest treasure and he was surrounded by them until his final day on this earth.
Mick dropped out of Hobbs High School in 1958 to join the Navy. He later obtained his GED, Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University and Texas A&M, and later obtained his Masters from St. Mary’s of San Antonio, TX.
He was born in Cotton Plant Arkansas on December 8, 1938. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia Ann, his three children, Dennis, Janet, April, two siblings, a brother, Jim and sister, Suzy, two Aunts, Edith and Opel, many, many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and too many friends to count.
He was predeceased by his mother, Christine, his father, Bennie and his younger brother, Richard.
