John T. Zimmerman II, age 70, of Converse TX peacefully passed away at the San Antonio Military Medical Center on December 13, 2021, surrounded by family, after a difficult battle with Covid 19.
John was born in Grand Rapids, MI in September 1951 to John Zimmerman and Edith Beye. John was survived by his wife, Marsha and their two children, Adam, and Matthew (and spouse Chase Edmondson), two grandchildren, Zakary, and Zoey and by his sister Nan Zimmerman. John was preceded in death by his parents, John, and Edith and two sisters, Virginia Jones and Kay Schendel.
John joined the United States Army on March 26, 1969, where he worked as a helicopter mechanic and was honorably discharged on Jan 7, 1972. John met Marsha in 1977 and they got married September 1978, right before Marsha joined the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. John supported her Air Force career by becoming a Mr. Mom, (taking care of the home and children) while working as an amazing carpenter.
John was a man with a heart of gold. He was very active with the American Legion Post 593 by supporting almost every event held for the Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Riders (ALR). John was a cornerstone to the Veterans Helping Veterans program, bringing his knowledge and his carpenter skills to home repairs for Veterans in the community. He was a 14-year member at Post 593 and over the years, he served in several positions as a member of the Legion, SAL, and Riders. John primarily served as Sergeant at Arms and Member at Large. He was also a longtime member of the Post Shuffleboard Team, Dart Team, and Pool Team where he assumed the captain role for many years. He also was active with the Patriot Guard where he would participate in the funeral rides to Ft Sam Houston Cemetery. John loved being part of the camping trips, the get togethers at Sean Lowder’s house, and the ALR rides where he got his road name of Speed Bump. John was the life of every party where his quick sense of humor had everyone laughing until they cried. John will be missed but not forgotten.
