Jose Angel Olivares entered in eternal rest on May 10, 2012 at the age of 81. He was born on January 4, 1931 to Manuel Olivares and San Juana P. Olivares in San Diego, Texas. Jose graduated from San Diego High School and attended Texas AM in College Station and Texas AI in Kingsville. He interrupted his electrical engineering studies at the end of his sophomore year and joined the U. S. Army. During the Korean War, he served as a radio operator and was the sole survivor of his company. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Army. After the war, he studied with Collins Radio and received a license to repair radios and televisions. He worked in the Dallas, Texas area and later moved to Los Angeles, California where he was employed in the same line of work. When the U. S. entered the Vietnam War, he once again wanted to be of service to his country. He was employed as a Space Age Engineer with the United States Agency for International Development to Vietnam. Upon his return to the U. S., he decided to live in San Diego, Texas and assist his father with the family owned grocery store. Later on, he moved to San Antonio, Texas and assisted his brother- in- law at the National Radiator Shop. In his elderly years, he resided at the Pecan Hill Apartments where he befriended many of the staff and fellow residents. Many of the residents expressed warm remembrances of his loving care and concern for others. Jose is preceded in death by his brothers, Manuel Olivares, Jr. and Elias Olivares, and his sisters, Dolores Olivares, and Emma O. Valdes. Jose’s surviving relatives include his brother, Robert Olivares (Port Isabel, Texas), his sisters, Elia O. Leal (Corpus Christi, Texas), and Anna M. Castillo (San Antonio, Texas), and thirteen nieces and nephews.
