Joyce Ann Hulsey, a beloved member of the San Antonio community, passed away on June 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 9, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas, Joyce led a remarkable life filled with love, faith, and devotion to her family.
Joyce dedicated a large part of her professional career to the banking industry, where she served as a bank teller and mortgage loan processor. Her work ethic and commitment were evident in every role she undertook at institutions such as First Federal Savings & Loan and BBVA Compass Bank. Beyond her career achievements, Joyce's true calling was caring for her family. She selflessly nurtured her own children, nieces, grandchildren, and even her husband's grandmother, Zona Rosenberg, who lived with them during her battle with Alzheimer's and dementia.
Education played a significant role in Joyce's life as well. She graduated from Highlands High School in 1966 and met the love of her life, Ben Hulsey. The couple exchanged vows shortly after graduation on March 4, 1967 when they were just 18 years old. The couple recently celebrated 57 years of marriage, and were devoted partners throughout their life together, especially during Joyce's declining health.
A woman of unwavering faith, Joyce found solace in the teachings of Catholicism instilled in her by her own mother. Joyce's devotion to Our Lady of Atonement Catholic Church was unwavering as she actively participated in daily Mass and weekly Adoration. Joyce's faith shone brightly even during challenging times in her health. Her positive outlook on life and gratitude towards medical staff left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Joyce's hobbies spoke volumes about her character - from crafting handmade rosaries to spending time in prayer with Jesus. She was known for being a prayer warrior who remembered numerous individuals in need each day. Moreover, she found joy in simple pleasures like eating Mexican food, especially chips and salsa, and indulging in popcorn while watching movies with her family.
In the memories cherished by those who knew her best, Joyce's love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren stands out prominently. She and Ben were known to take their grandchildren on countless family vacations to destinations they enjoyed such as Arizona, Smoky Mountains, DisneyWorld, Virginia, among many others.
Joyce is survived by her devoted husband Ben Hulsey; daughters Desiree Lea Gumm, Lisa Marie Rece, and Lacey Erin Hautzinger; grandchildren Alex Paul Gumm; Jarred Benjamin Gumm; Ryan Mason Gumm; Madelyn Rose Baker; Michaela Grace Hautzinger; Samantha Erin Hautzinger; great-grandchildren Carter Paul and Emma Claire; along with siblings Judith Matull, Mary Crockett, Paulette Dellert, Bruce Birt, Billy Birt, Rebecca Kassner, Brenda Mireles, Jeffrey Birt and Jeanne Knotts.
Joyce was predeceased by her mother Nickoline Birt, father Harold Birt and brother Rodney Birt.
Joyce Ann Hulsey's contributions to those around her will be remembered fondly as they carry forward the values she held dear - love for family above all else and unyielding faith that guided every aspect of her life. May she rest peacefully knowing that she touched countless lives with kindness and grace.
