Mike passed away at the age of 90 after fighting off heart disease for years. He was preceded in death by Sami, his wife of 55 years. He is survived by his children: Michael and wife Melissa, Peter and wife Pam, and his daughter Julie. He will also be remembered by his Grandchildren: Travis, Hannah and husband Seth, Gabi, Mia, Meridith and husband Cullen, Stacy and husband Greg, and Ali and husband Matt...as well as 5 Great-Grandchildren: Weldon, Hallie, Pace, Henry and Read.
Mike’s father and mother founded Amigos Food Company in 1925, a business that is still in operation today, and which he worked at throughout his life, including two to three times a week for the past 7 – 10 years. Amigos Food Company was his second Family. He was proud that over the years, there were 2 and 3 generations of the same family from the south and west side community that he grew up in that had helped build the company. In addition to Amigos Food Company he also worked at his wife’s family’s business, Nordhaus Frozen Foods.
Besides his Family and Amigos Food Company, Mike was very involved in his son’s swimming careers (having swam for the University of Texas himself), as well as his daughter’s involvement in showing and jumping horses...and never missed an opportunity to brag about their accomplishments, or those of his Grandkids. He was also passionate about the outdoors, hunting and fishing...with some of his fondest memories being those spent outdoors with his children, their friends and his grandchildren. His last harvest being an old 8pt buck this past season at the age of 90 with the old Marlin 30-30 that his Father had given him when he turned 17.
Mike was respected and loved completely, and will be greatly missed by family, friends, co-workers and strangers alike, always making the time to listen and lend a hand.
A Military Honor Service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Pavilion 3, this Friday, March 13th at 9:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the YMCA of Greater San Antonio where Mike spent many days as a child and teenager swimming, boxing and participating in gymnastics.
