Mario R Gonzalez was born on January 19, 1938, in Primera (Harlingen) Texas to Luz and Concha Gonzalez. As a young man he was a migrant worker as well as a great baseball player. Mario played in the Mexican League for many years as well as the Double-A Rio Grande Valley Giants in 1960. He was a lefty slugger!
Mario was drafted for the Vietnam war in 1961 and proudly served in the United States Army from 1961- 1963. He married Sylvia (Trejo) González on May 22, 1965, and they had three children.
He is joined in heaven with his sisters, Molly Parsley and Cándida Gutiérrez.
Mario is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Sylvia (Trejo) González, his brother Beto (Beatriz) Rocha, son Mario (Sonia) González Jr., daughter Jeomara (Chacha) Enkelmann (Henrik) and son Marcus (Sara) González as well as his grandchildren; Ulysses Torres, Clarissa González, Isaiah (Lauren) González, Nate González, Isabel González, Jaxson González, and Mateo González, and 6 great grandchildren.
Mario was a skilled construction welder for over 30 years. He worked for The Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local Union 597 of Harlingen Texas and Local Union 319 of Aurora Illinois. He was loved by all and will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, love for family and of course sports: especially the Chicago White Sox and Dallas Cowboys. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, Mario was a true pilar for the entire Gonzalez family. He will be greatly missed and forever cherished in memory.
