Mary Jane “MJ” Sanjuan, devoted Wife, Mother, Grammy and Friend, was called home unexpectedly on June 5, 2021, at the age of 76, in San Antonio, Texas. MJ was born in Dover, New Jersey on November 6, 1944.
MJ is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Mario Sanjuan, daughters, Kristen Cherry, Suzanne Glass, Son, Alex Sanjuan, Grandchildren, Ryan Johnson, Luke Dutton, Brady Dutton, Justin Glass, Jacob Glass and many friends considered family.
MJ is preceded in death by her son, Michael Cherry, Father, Phillip Mitchell and Mother, Catherine Lampkin.
MJ graduated from Morrison Hills Regional High School in Wharton, New Jersey and later went to work at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey before moving to St. Paul, Minnesota where her children were born. In 1984 MJ moved to Houston, working as an office manager for a boiler manufacturing company. While working as an office manager she met and fell in love with Mario, they married on March 18,1985 and have been inseparable ever since. In 1992 Mario and MJ moved to San Antonio, where they built their life together.
MJ was vibrant, energetic, and loved to cook amazing meals for everyone, no one ever left hungry. She adored her children and her grandchildren and would tell anyone who would listen about them! She would fiercely protect and defend them if she felt someone had crossed a line. MJ took great pride in our military, her father was a Colonel in the United States Army and her grandson, Justin, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. She was proud to live in our great nation and defended our troops with immense passion!
MJ was an amazing artist, to most she would tell you she was not. Anyone who saw her artwork fell in love. She would paint just about anything she could get her hands on. She also painted items for charity events and there are beautiful canvas sceneries which can be found proudly displayed on the walls in the homes of her children and grandchildren. MJ also never passed up a beach trip, she loved the water and her toes in the sand.
MJ was witty and opinionated. You always knew where she stood on any topic and not shy to tell you why. She had a silly and crazy fun sense of humor and could cut up with anyone. She never met a stranger and everyone, literally everyone, the air conditioner maintenance employees, the alarm company employees, and her hairdresser were invited to the garage. Once lured in, she would challenge anyone to a good game of Yahtzee or Train. You would typically find some oldies, Jimmy Buffet, or Elvis Presley playing while she and Mario enjoyed the many that came to socialize in the “garage.” MJ always had a unique sense and ability to make everyone feel comfortable and loved.
MJ is and will be missed terribly. She was exceptionally kind and had a heart the size of Texas. She is so very loved. Our hearts are broken.
Family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Make a Wish Foundation for Central and South Texas San Antonio Regional Office.
