Oscar Henry Speegle Sr. passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 at the age of 92. He lived in a personal care home where he was treated with kindness and dignity. Mr. Speegle was born on January 1, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas to Carmen Mayorga and Harper T. Speegle Sr. He was the eldest of six children.
He was a hardworking person with an Impressive Skill and work ethic as an Auto Mechanic. He taught himself, as needed, often reading at night from his numerous Chilton Auto Repair Manuals which he kept at his bedside. When his job relocated to Dallas, he made the weekly commute for five years, coming home on weekends. When people drove by, they often found him out in the yard working on vehicles. Under cars, daily, sometimes he would work late into the night, beyond "normal" hours to complete repairs for his customers. Mr. Speegle served in Korea with the US Army from 1952 - 1954.
He enjoyed gardening for beauty, but also gained appreciation for the health benefits plants offered, which he learned from his youth when living in Mexico. He was a very Creative Soul who had a talent for drawing and use of color.
Remaining on the Southside of San Antonio, Mr. Speegle was married to his devoted wife, Lydia Romero, for more than 60 years, until her death. His mother-in-law, Pauline Romero, also lived in the home with his wife and four children: Oscar Henry Jr., Sandra Sue, Karla Joy, and Karl Jason. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Oscar Henry Jr. He is survived by his younger brother, Harper Jr., nieces, nephews, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Speegle had an introverted nature, and he strove to be frugal. His direct burial at Fort Sam Houston was out of respect for his desire for Simplicity. May God bless the team of Magnolia Hospice Company and The Grandparent's House who cared for him so patiently, with love and grace. ~ John 3:16
