Patsy Ruth Brown passed away quietly at home on August 11, 2020, with the beautiful assurance that Jesus was waiting for her with open arms. “Well done, good and faithful servant” describes her life.
Known to most as Pat, Grandma Pat, or Aunt Pat, she was deeply loved by her immediate family, a large extended family, and many life-long friends. Born to Harry Howard “Red” and Myrtle Brown on July 16, 1931, and raised in the small farming community of Odem, Texas, Pat learned early the value of hard work and resourceful living. It was in college obtaining a degree in education at Texas A & I in Kingsville that she met her husband, Joe Brown. As it turned out Joe’s twin brother Jack and younger brother Ralph attended college there at the same time and also met their future brides, Bobbie and Mary Ann. The six of them had an unbreakable bond from that time forward. They settled and raised their families in San Antonio, even living on the same street for years. Pat is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, his brothers Jack and Ralph, sister-in-law Mary Ann, and her brother Howard Brown.
She and Joe were early members of Concordia Lutheran Church where she directed the first choir and was a faithful member for 60 years. Over the years at Concordia, she served as a Sunday school teacher, fourth-grade teacher, long-standing choir member as well as on the Visitation Committee and Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League. She was honored as Woman of the Year in 1994.
Her marriage with Joe, raising their children, and embracing them as adults, along with their families, were Pat’s greatest purpose and pleasure in life. She leaves behind a legacy of selfless service and commitment to her faith. Her love, care, and devotion were excellent examples to her family. Carrying her legacy forward are her son David Brown and his wife Kelly, daughter Vickie and husband David Lautner, and son Steve Brown and wife Julie. She is also survived by her grandchildren Katherine and husband Carson Conwell, Jonathan Lautner, Zachary Lautner, Desiree Mata, and husband Eli and great-grandchildren Ellie and Noah, Bethany and husband Henry and great-granddaughter Zadie, Michael Brown and wife Grace, and Christopher Brown and wife Jaclyn and great-granddaughter Emily.
Pat was a happy, contented lady who had a heart of gratitude and joy. She loved to sing. And sing she did…. in the choir, in the kitchen, in the garden, at the lake cabin, to her children and grandchildren, and to herself! If she wasn’t singing a familiar song or hymn, she made up a tune. Even as her mind was gradually taken by Alzheimer’s Disease, she never forgot how to sing.
Love,
like a beautiful song,
echos on in the heart
when the last note is silent.
