Our beloved Popo, better known as Rafael Torres, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born November 12, 1945 in Texas City, Texas to Guadalupe and Humberto O. Torres.
Though his body was frail and tired, Rafael passed away peacefully in the late morning of the 26th. On a daily basis, his spirit was full of appreciation for every breath he consumed on this earth. Rafael wore many hats – Husband, Father, Popo, Son, Brother, Son-In-Law, Father-In-Law, Uncle, Compadre, Teammate and Friend. He had such a BIG personality, and was such an admirable, compassionate, kind, quick-witted and intelligent individual.
Rafael enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, and served 2 tours in the Vietnam War. He fought the courageous fight on the front lines…gosh, what a strong human! Rafael married his loving bride, Rebecca Hernandez, in 1969 and always made it his life’s mission to love and take care of her. They blessed each other with 5 children.
He was a gentleman of many talents. He later established a reputable and lengthy career in International Sales. There was never a dull moment with Rafael…always making the most of every moment in life. He was a true lifetime learner by exploring; consequently, daring his offspring to always try new experiences. He enjoyed having in-depth, respectful and methodical conversations with family and friends, even if it didn't align with his opinion. He always imparted sayings that were insightful; yet, he also had the talented ability to make you chuckle with his witty humor. Until the very end, he had a positive outlook on life! His BIG personality equally matched his LOVE for all. He was THAT person that greeted everyone, whether you knew him or not! He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His ultimate pride was sharing their accolades with friends and family (or heck, anyone who would listen)! His family was the passionate driving force in his life. His favorite sports teams included the Astros, the Spurs and the Houston Oilers! His athletic zest for life entailed playing softball in his early years. His all-time favorite pastime was golf and “shooting the breeze” with his group of cool golf buddies.
He was the ultimate provider and giver of life, love, time and passion. Rafael whole-heartedly and unconditionally loved his family and friends. His humor, kindness and captivating personality granted him a plethora of friendships. He lived life gloriously.
Rafael was preceded in death by his mother, Guadalupe Torres; his father, Humberto O. Torres; brothers, Noe Torres, Joe Torres; and son-in-law/best friend, Edward Perez. Rafael is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rebecca Torres; daughters, Monica Goerges (Jeffrey), Melissa Perez, Rebecca Torres, Raquel Garcia (Christopher); son, Rafael Javier Torres; grandchildren, Rachel (Travis), Zachary, Rebekah, Danielle, Matthew, Gabriella, Luke, Nathan, Leah, Monica, and Adriana; great grandchildren, Brooklynn and Troy; siblings, Luis Torres (Lenora), Elvira Castillo (Joe), Ruben Torres, Guadalupe Webber (Joel), Bruno Torres (Emma), George Torres, David Torres (Elma), and Danny Torres; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, extended family members, and a lifetime of friends.
