Robert G. Smith, 91, of Canyon Lake passed away at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital on Monday, March 30, 2009. He was born in Sunrise, Minn., on July 27, 1917, to Fred and Bessie Griffin Smith and raised in Harris, Minn. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Patricia Van Pelt Smith; their two children, James Robert Smith and Sandra Smith Taylor and her husband Michael; sisters-in-law Glennys Clover Smith, Elizabeth Van Pelt Holland and Margaret Van Pelt Gillam; grandchildren Stacey Taylor Scheufler and husband Garry, Jeffery Michael Taylor and wife Marianna; great-grandchildren Chloe Elisabeth and Clark David Scheufler, Michael Davis, Anna Miles and Ashlyn Evert Taylor; nieces Nancy Ryan, Pam Goranson, Christianne Richards and Patricia Barteau; nephews Phillip Holland and Harry Lee Gillam Jr.; and many grandnieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James H. Smith; brothers-in-law, Harry Lee Gillam and L. R. (Dutch) Holland; and nephew, John Van Gillam. Bob graduated from North Branch High School in Minnesota and attended Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota. He came to Texas in 1941, and served in the U.S. Navy for three years, three months, and three days during World War II. He lived in Houston for 34 years where he was manager and owner of Stone Company of Houston. After retiring to Canyon Lake in 1981, Bob was a member of St. Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church, where he served as treasurer and Bishops Warden during the early 1980s. He served on the Board of Canyon Lake Action Center as treasurer and also on the Board of the Tye Preston Memorial Library. He was a Mason for 62 years and was a member of Canyon Lake Masonic Lodge No. 1425.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 2130, 31250 Texas Highway 306, Canyon Lake, TX 78133. The family has requested that memorial contributions be given to The Bob Smith Memorial Fund at St. Francis or the charity of ones choice.
