Sylvan Ray Demand, a steadfast soul whose life was marked by dedication and service, departed this world on September 30, 2024, at the age of 89, in the warm embrace of San Antonio, Texas. Born on September 3, 1935, at home in the tranquil surroundings of Pettis County, Missouri, Sylvan carried with him a spirit of resilience and kindness that touched all who knew him.
His formative years were spent at Renigan School, where he first nurtured a love for learning, which flourished further during his time at Smithton High School, from which he graduated in the distinguished class of 1953. Little did he know that this promising academic path would soon lead him to a calling even greater than himself—his service in the United States Air Force. He joined shortly after his graduation, embodying the virtues of duty and honor that defined his character throughout his life.
Sylvan's military service is a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country, instilling in him a profound sense of responsibility and camaraderie. His experiences in the Air Force shaped his worldview and cultivated within him a deep appreciation for the frailty and beauty of life.
Notable moments from Sylvan's life include when he was Baptized and confirmed at Lake Creek Methodist Church, and when he married Karen Batt in Nebraska in February in 1965.
He is preceded in death by his parents Roderick and Bassie (Momberg) Demand; and previous wife Karen Batt.
He is survived by his loving wife Alma Adkins.
As we gather to celebrate his remarkable journey, we invite those who wish to pay their respects to attend a Memorial Service held in his honor on October 21, 2024, at 3:00 PM, at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas, 78209. A second service to follow will be at Lake Creek United Methodist Church, located at 33074 Lake Creek Road, Smithton, Missouri, 65350 (service dates pending). This hallowed ground is a fitting tribute to a man whose life was devoted to service—both to his family and to his nation.
Sylvan Ray Demand leaves behind a legacy embedded in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him—a legacy of unwavering support, love, and community spirit. His memory will forever shine bright, reminding us of the quiet strength and the indelible mark one individual can leave upon the fabric of life.
