After a lifetime of travels, Travis Clifton Duran arrived at his heavenly home on October 23, 2013. Travis was born on October 28, 1922, on a farm in the area of Red Rock (Bastrop County),Texas to James William and Mary Viola (nee Shackelford) Duran. He was preceded in death by his siblings Reva Duran Sloan Erickson, J.W. Duran Jr. (Jake), Lena Mae (Tootsie) Duran Corder Fitch, Ethel Cherry Duran, (his first wife of 32 years), and stepson Bruce Hendrickson.
A graduate of Lockhart High School, Travis also earned an Associate degree from San Antonio College. He enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard in 1939, was mobilized as part of the US Army war effort, and transitioned into the Army Air Force, serving in Italy during WWII. His favorite duty station was in College Station, Texas, where his 3 year staff assignment to the Air Force ROTC program fulfilled his ambition to be a fighting Texas Aggie. He retired from the Air Force after 21 years active duty.
For more than 60 years, Travis enjoyed Masonic and Shriner activities and fellowship. A longtime member of the San Antonio Executive Association and the San Antonio Traffic Club, Travis reinvented himself several times in the civilian world, eventually retiring from Central Freight Lines at age 63 to pursue his lifelong dream of travelling throughout the USA. He is survived by his loving wife Janet Whitmore Hendrickson Duran (his 38 year fulltime travel buddy), his daughter Vicky and son-in-law Larry Hemme, son Kent and his wife Doris Duran, son Terry and his wife June Duran, stepson Jeff and his wife Beth Hendrickson, stepson Brian Hendrickson, 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
