Weldon C. Land entered rest on December 24, 2014 at the age of 90 with his loving wife Virginia by his side. He was born in Knightstown, Indiana on December 8, 1924 to Carlos E. and Helen I. Land.
Weldon knew what was important and he knew what was trivial in life. And thus his life was formed. He did more than exist…he lived. He did more than touch…he felt. He did more than look…he saw. He did more than hear…he listened. He lived courageously, honorably, and with purpose. He left an indelible mark upon this earth and upon the lives of all those he knew. He was a remarkable husband, father, granddad, uncle, and friend.
After graduating from Richmond High School, like many of the GREATEST GENERATION he joined World War II as soon as he could. In fact so fast, he forgot to tell the navy he could not swim! The sights and sounds of his tour in the Pacific had an impact on his young life transporting him from a youngster to an adult and he shared his many “war stories” over the years. While on shore duty, he helped crew sea planes and flew even higher when he married his life’s partner Virginia Lee McNeely on July 13, 1945.
After his naval discharge he began work at Central Power & Light Company in May 1946 as a supervising accountant where he worked for 43 years until his retirement in 1989.
Weldon and Virginia enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada together whether it was by RV or with family and friends and had many great adventures during their 69 years of marriage.
Weldon was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Phyllis Brown, Ruth Harris, and twin infant sisters JoAnne and Jeanne Land. His niece Nancy Minor also preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Virginia whom he never let a day go by without telling her “I Love You”. He is also survived by his children whom he loved dearly: Carol (Randy) Kellum of Montgomery, TX; Steven (Susan) Land of Corpus Christi, TX; Sharon (John) Irwin of Corpus Christi, TX; and Cindy (Carl) Williams of San Antonio, TX. Grandchildren: Allison Horsley, Garrett Land, Ryan Simpson, Meagan Nye, and Cody Simpson.
Great Grandchildren: Shelby, Kyler, Jaxon, and Jace. Also surviving Weldon are his sister and brother-n-law Dorothy Jean and Bobby Stiles. Also numerous nieces and nephews: Anne Evans, Kathy Brown, Beth Garwood, Jeff Brown, Phillip Harris, Dianne Butler, David Harris, Mark Harris, Renee Sparks, Kathy Hargrove, Linda Wade, Nancy Wallace, and Robert Stiles. Weldon was greatly blessed with great nieces and nephews as well as great great nieces and nephews. Weldon’s special family friends Ann Leyh and Herman Leyh have been a blessing to him over the years and the family would like to acknowledge with special thanks Rita and Charles Collins for their kindness and non wavering help during Weldon’s recent illness.
