Butch was born on October 16, 1951 to Oscar Sims Childers, Jr. and Mattie Lawanna (Lee) Edwards Childers in San Diego, California. Oscar was in the US Navy and the Korean War was heating up, so he was at sea aboard his ship much of Butch’s early life.
When Butch was 4 years old, we lived on Guam, M.I. for 2 years. Moving to the East Coast from Guam, the family lived in Virginia until Butch decided to enlist into the US Marine Corps when he was 17. He spent 2 years in the corps, then got out to make his fortune.
In 1968 he became a Washington Redskins fan. No matter where he lived, he has never wavered from his loyalty to the Redskins. Hail to the Redskins!!! He was also a Texas Ranger’s fan.
Butch was always musically inclined. Both, his father and mother’s family played instruments and sang over the years. He took up the guitar early in life and sang first with his family, then his sister and brother and finally went solo. They all had/have great voices.
Before he was 21, his first child was born, a beautiful baby girl. Her name was Deanna Joy. He was one of the proudest papa’s around. Not too many years passed, before he was blessed with a son, William Frank Jr. (Billy) and a couple years later another baby girl joined his family, Bethany Dawn.
Several years later he would have two additional daughters, Hannah Leigh and Robi Jewel. He also had three stepchildren over the years, Marsha Danielle, Chelsea Marie and Joshua Michael, and he loved them dearly.
His children were the apples of his eye and he loved them with all of his heart. He showed no partiality between them and tried to let them know just how deep his love was for them. There were times when he didn’t think he succeeded in this endeavor, but being his mother, I knew very well how he felt about them.
Butch tried his hand at diversified jobs and did well on them; working in a furniture factory making furniture, working on the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, driving all sizes of trucks, locally and big rigs over the road. He loved to drive. It gave him time to think. During this time he started putting his thoughts and feelings down on paper. He wrote poems and short stories about his life and to specific people.
The last 9 years of his life has been spent with his wife, Barbara, in Texas. They had a special bond and in his own way, he tried to show and tell her just how much she meant to him. He loved her dearly and the feeling was mutual. They went to church together and both loved the Lord.
Butch passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 at the age of 65. He is preceded in death by Oscar Sims Childers, Jr., Charles Delbert Myers, Jr., and David Walton Childers, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara Ann Cesaro Myers; sons William (Billy) F. Myers, Jr. of North Carolina, Joshua Michael Carmack of Hawaii; daughters Deanna Joy Mushero of Virginia, Bethany Dawn Kilby of North Carolina, Hannah Leigh Myers of North Carolina, Robi Jewel Myers of North Carolina, Chelsea Marie Carmack of Texas and Marsha Danielle Neuens of North Carolina; mother Mattie Lawanna (Lee) Childers; Sister Brenda Levins of Georgia; brother James (Jim) Childers of California; grandchildren Timothy (TJ) Mushero, Jr., Dylan Kilby, Kloee Kilby, Hayden Myers, Kelly Shew and Hunter Renegar. Butch is also sorely missed by his nephews Chip Childers, DJ Cook and Danny Cook; and niece Misty Combs.
We will never know what God has in mind for him now, but we know that God has a plan, and the day Jesus came to take him home started his journey in his eternal home. May God watch over him and all of his family, friends and loved ones left behind. It is our prayer that we will all see him again someday. Rest in Peace my Precious Son. Your Mother.
